Happy Monday! It’s summertime and that means project time! Beyond clothes and makeup, DIY projects are a way I find balance in my life. It’s a great way to express your creativity so today I’m finally pulling together a post on our budget bathroom remodel! I transformed our bathroom for under $100! I have been laid up in bed this last week with a possible torn meniscus, after spending 8 hours a day the previous week redoing our upstairs unit to get it updated and rented out again! DIY projects are on the brain because, until this past week, all I could think about was painting and taping and fixing dryers and skim coating walls! I’ve been up to my elbows in DIY fun! This week…not so much. Very frustrating.
Since my knee injury kept me from doing much of anything this week (I did manage to get the last room taped and painted by splitting it up over 3 days…shhh…don’t tell my doctor!), it was the perfect time to look back over the budget bathroom remodel project I did last fall and pull together my receipts! Plus, maybe it will inspire you to spruce up your bathroom while it’s warm enough to open the windows!
I did a series shortly after we moved into our new house on how I took our super-ugly, dated bathroom and turned into something I can live in for the next few years. Here’s the before and after picture. I’m pretty happy with it!
Eventually we will need to replace the tub in this bathroom and when we do that, it’s likely that the floors will have to go so I didn’t want to spend a ton of money doing updates. I’m finally pulling together this post though because I just have to share – it’s awesome what we were able to do for less than $100 and you can do it too!
Here is the overall picture of what we did and what it cost. You can see all three parts of this series ( Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 ) for the details!

How We Remodeled Our Bathroom on a Budget:
First Step
Got rid of the ugly ceramic bathroom tile (original post here) by painting over it with Rust-Oleum’s Tub and Tile Refinishing 2-Part Kit in White.
This stuff was seriously amazing…I highly recommend!
Cost: $44.56
- $24.30 – Rust-Oleum’s Tub and Tile Refinishing 2-Part Kit
- $5.79 – LimeAway (I recommend the spray version after using the non-spray version myself)
- $8.60 – five 100 grit sanding disks
- $3.20 – 4 inch roller cover pack
- $2.67 – 2.5 quart bucket
Already on Hand/Borrowed:
- Bleach
- Scrubber
- Sponge
- Comet
- Abrasive Pad
- Orbital Sander
- Microfiber cloth
- Household fan (for air circulation)
- Painter’s Tape
- Paint brush or here
- Wooden Paint Stick to mix
- 4″ paint roller
Second Step
Removed the Floral Wallpaper Border and painted the Baseboard heater (so it would match the pretty white walls!)
Cost: $5.35
On hand already:
- Comet
- Scrub Brush
- 100-grit sandpaper
- microfiber cloth
- blue tape
- vinegar
- spray bottle
Third Step
Installed inexpensive peel and stick vinyl wood planks over the ugly linoleum (original post here).
Cost: $47.81
- $32.76 – Style Selections Peel-and-Stick Vinyl Wood Planks in Golden Oak ($45.86 for the case plus a few extras. Returned $13.10!)
- $8.60 – Contour Gauge, Now recommend this one
- $6.45 – Caulk
Already on hand:
- Level
- Large Bowl and Scrub Brush
- Scissors
- Tape Measure
- Pencil
- Utility Knife
All together, that comes to $97.72! Whoohoo! We didn’t replace anything big, but I think it looks a whole lot better than it did when we got the house! It’s totally possible to do a budget bathroom remodel for under $100!
Even if you don’t have time to do this project right now, pin it for later!
Here it is again!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Let me know in the comments below what projects you are working on!

Wow, this is amazing! I seriously cannot believe the price. We had two of our bathrooms quoted for a remodel and it was astronomical. I am a do it yourself-re but my husband is not, so we usually hire it done but I’m going to show them this!
Virginia says
I know!!! I was so happy with it! My husband and I are the same way. He wanted to hire out and I agreed that after we fix up our rental units (it is a 3 unit home and we live in 1) then we will hire someone to really redo this bathroom but that’s at least another year or 2 out and there was NO WAY I was living with that bathroom until then! So…he said if I could do it cheaply then I could fix it up! I did a ton of research and I’m really happy with how it turned out! Even just painting the tile was a huge improvement! Good luck!

It looks amazing Virginia!! My husband and I really want to put in a patio. We haven’t made any moves yet, but we’ve been trying to do some planning! I hope we can get that underway before summer ends!

Thanks Brooke! Oooh! A patio, how fun! My husband wants to do that too when you’re a landlord the tenant units tend to come first! Have fun planning!

Wow, you did a great job! I had no idea that tile refinisher by rustoleum even existed! I’m going to have to remember that.
Virginia says
Yes, and it works great! Thank you!

The floor looks so good! It is amazing what paint can do as well!

Thanks Mary! The floor is definitely my favorite! Periodically I still walk in there and just smile because I’m so happy with how it looks!
