When in Doubt, Add Stripes

I’ve been trying not to post this boyfriend blazer every week (though I wear it all the time), but when I put this outfit together a few weeks ago, I knew I had to feature it sometime. It’s a great example of: when in doubt, add stripes.

I wouldn’t say this outfit is extremely original. There is no out-of-the-ordinary touch – no major statement jewelry or outrageous patterned piece. You may even have put one together recently that is like it. But, it’s a great example of how having certain basics in your closet can make putting together an outfit very easy.

When you’re stuck, add stripes

This day was one of those days where I didn’t lay out my outfit the night before. Therefore, I had to think quickly about what to wear to work in the morning. I saw the blazer on the rack and knew that it would be professional for work. And then, without having to think about it, I grabbed my white skinny jeans and my leopard pumps because I know that they go well together and go with pretty much everything else!

But what to add up top? I could easily have added a white v-neck top. A monochrome outfit base with a pop of another color on top is a typical outfit short-cut for me. But this time, it just felt a little too bland for me. And that’s when I (quite literally) thought to myself, “When in doubt, add stripes.”

It’s so true. A striped turtleneck or striped top is such a closet staple for me and I’ve worn it so many different ways. You can see a few of the ways I’ve worn stripes HERE.

That one addition of the striped top gave the outfit a little interest and I was ready to head out the door.

Some Recommendations

Boyfriend Blazer

Get yourself one of these boyfriend blazers. I wasn’t a fan at first, because I don’t love an over-sized fit. But, this one has an over-sized length without an over-sized fit. Plus, the gold buttons give it such a classy feel.

The fabric is such good-quality that I know it will last for years. The pink one already sold out but the gray, black and green are still in stock.

White Skinny Jeans

I searched high and low, for years, to find the perfect white skinny ankle jeans. Every pair I tried were either too-see-through or too thin to look flattering. When I found these white skinny ankle jeans at LOFT on clearance, I felt like I found a diamond-in-the-rough.

These exactly skinny jeans are no longer available, but I’ve tried on LOFT’s white skinny jeans since then and they still have the same thickness that made them so opaque and flattering as when I bought mine.

They are more expensive than most of the jeans I buy, but you can’t scrimp on a good pair of white skinny jeans. Plus, the LOFT skinny jeans are available in so many different cuts and sizes. I’ve linked three different styles for you below.

Unfortunately, though we haven’t been getting the snow that everyone else has, it’s been freezing here in Rhode Island. I need to find ways to feel like spring while dressing like winter! ha!

It has prompted quite a shopping flurry online. Lots and lots of research. We are in the process of trying to turn our downstairs unit around after a rough eviction process so all of my free time in the last month has been taken up with painting and cleaning things in the downstairs apartment. No time to get out and shop, I’m afraid. So, online shopping only.

I’m going to be honest, a lot of these picks are from Amazon and H&M. I just can’t help it if H&M has so many good things! And lately, the draw of Amazon Prime’s free shipping and returns has prompted me to try harder at finding good Amazon deals when I can’t get out to the mall to shop.

The following represent what I’ve been looking for in the last month. I hope there are a few things here that give you some ideas for updating your spring wardrobe or save you some time tracking down something you’ve been looking for.

White Blazer

I’ve always been a fan of blazers and have recently (after I found this one) fallen in love with longer, boyfriend-style blazers. My tried-and-true white blazer (you can see it WAY back in the day…here) is still in good shape but it is no longer holding its shape as well and is more dull than it used to be. That is to be expected with white and I’m impressed it lasted as long as it has. But, it is an MVP in my work wardrobe and I believe it’s time for an upgrade. Here are some of the white blazers I’m looking at.

Pleated Midi Skirts

I have loved pleated midi skirts for a few years, but it was only last year that I finally bought one (2nd image).

I love a colorful, pleated skirt for Spring and this year I’ve seen a number of different options at a midi length. They are perfect for me to wear to work.

Trench Coat

A trench coat has been on my “to buy” list since I still lived in Washington! The problem is, I never quite find the right one. And honestly, I really need to just go try some on in-store. The NY and Co one below has great reviews!

Here are some that look good to me:

A Lighter-Colored Overcoat

It’s still pretty cold here in New England so realistically, the trench coat isn’t going to keep me warm enough every day. At least, it won’t for awhile. Enter a heavier coat in softer colors. I would really like to check these options out at H&M.

Pops of Color

I am really trying to steer away from pink because I already have so much pink in my spring wardrobe. But, I also know that I love pink and there are a lot of options out there right now for pink blazers (which I don’t have).

Dress Up A Basic Outfit: Leopard Accents

I’ve been on a mission lately to show you more ways to wear some important basics in your closet. The easiest way to do that is to dress up a basic outfit made up of items you likely already have in your closet or items you should have in your closet. One of those important basics is a chambray button-up. I believe that every teacher needs a chambray top because there are so many ways to wear it in a casual professional environment like teaching. (For more on “casual professional,” see this post.) That being said, it’s so casual that I forget to wear it to work until I make a point of pulling it out!

A Basic Outfit Base

On one of my days off a few weeks ago I brainstormed a few new ways to wear my chambray button-up and this was one that I came up with. In this case, the chambray isn’t even the focus. In fact, there really isn’t a focus because it’s all rather basic.

To dress up a basic outfit, you need a collection of everyday neutrals. In my closet, a good pair of black skinny jeans and a cable knit sweater are two important everyday neutrals. They both pair nicely with the chambray top and together, I think of it like a casual outfit turned upside down. Instead of the jeans on the bottom with a black top, you have the black on the bottom with a “jean” top.

You could always wear this outfit as-is, but it was a little too plain for me. My favorite part about a basic outfit base is that it allows me to bring in more of my personality in the accessories.

Dress Up With Some Leopard Accents

My love of leopard is nothing new here (see!), so it shouldn’t be surprising that I pulled out my trusty leopard mules. They are often the pop I use to add a little personality because they go with everything. In this case though, I felt like there was still something missing up top. There was texture from the cable knit sweater but no additional pattern, and that was just a little too blah for this girl.

The fun thing about this outfit though, is that you can dress it up a lot of different ways. Accessories are a great way to add some personality to an otherwise simple outfit. You could add in a bright, candy-colored statement necklace (do you remember this one?! I still have it!) with some fun pink pumps. Or, maybe add a silk scarf to the mix. In this case I used the belt from my leopard dress as a scarf and I love how it turned out.

Sometimes you just need to play with your wardrobe a bit. For me, it’s a way to express a different part of my creative side that sometimes feels stifled after a long work week. It’s fun for me to play around with color and patterns. When my eyes were scanning my wardrobe for what to pair with this outfit, they fell on the leopard dress and I knew I just had to try something new. Now that I have a “new” accessory in my repetoire, I know that I will be pulling it out more as the weather starts to warm up.
