Dressing for International Women’s Day

Tuesday is International Women’s Day and as a United States Politics and Comparative Government teacher, awareness of women’s global issues is important to me. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Pledge for Parity.” Throughout the world women have made great progress, including increased access to education and financial institutions, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Gender disparities widen as the level of education increases (see chart here), the gender pay gap (what do I mean? / visualizations by industry here) is improving but still has a long way to go, and in some areas women are refused education or married as children, forced into slavery, or barred from political participation. Though I could talk about any number of issues on this day, I’m choosing to focus on parity in political power.

On February 26th, 14 female reformist candidates won seats in the legislature of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and though that is a small percentage of the 290 seats, with the possibility of additional seats awarded through electoral runoffs in April, Iran could find themselves with the largest female delegation in the history of their parliament. This makes government teachers like me excited because though only slightly (and I mean slightly) less than half of the world’s population is female, “only one in five members of lower or single houses of parliament worldwide is a woman” (UN). As reported by the UN Statistics Division’s report on The World’s Women 2015, female heads of state have grown only from 12 to 19 over the past 20 years and only 18% of appointed ministers (think Cabinet Secretary) are women. A number of factors go into these statistics, including gender norms and expectations.

In the United States in 2015, 104 women held positions in Congress. That’s 19.4% of 535 members. In Rwanda, 58% of their parliament is female.

I could belabor this point but I realize this is a fashion blog 🙂 Suffice it to say, when I talk to my students I want to be able to say to both my male and female students that they have equal chance of running for the US Senate and winning. I want a future daughter I may have to know that she is “worth” as much as a male with the same education and experience. Taking the Pledge for Parity doesn’t mean we put the achievements of men down or ignore the progress we’ve made as a country, but it means we work for the best of everyone in our community, regardless of gender.

Valentine’s Day Teacher Outfit

Hello all! I hope you had a stupendous Valentine’s Weekend. I love Valentine’s Day! I love the colors and the emphasis on love – whether it’s for a significant other or friends and family, it’s a great thing to celebrate those we love! I have been blessed with a stupendous husband who works so hard for our little family and still makes time to help me take photos for my blog! These last few weeks have been super busy for both of us and it seems like the weather, our schedules and shipping services have been against us. For various reasons I didn’t get good pictures of my Valentine’s Day outfit for school so right before we headed out to our own Valentine’s Day dinner date, Jeremy snapped a few pictures for me in the fading light! So this week you get 2 outfits!

I’m not sure what it is about holidays, but I adore dressing up for holidays at school. This year I showed my Valentine’s spirit with a head-to-toe pink and red ensemble, as well as featuring my new favorite pair of shoes!! I’ve been lusting over these for months and when they were back in stock, I snatched them up. I did end up having to exchange my regular size for one size smaller so the shoe wouldn’t keep slipping off. Now they’re a tad tight but my husband made a good point, small shoes can stretch out but shoes that are too big will never shrink. So, we’ll see how this goes.

Valentine’s Day Dinner Date

Though I ordered this cute ruffle top, it didn’t come in time (urgh…) and I switched to my trusty long-sleeved lace top.

For our dinner date I repeated a lot of the items I wore above. These Kendra Scott Alexandra earrings are such a great pop of color against my dark hair and perfect for a Valentine’s dinner date!

Statement Style #2 – The Bib Necklace

I fell in love with this necklace the first time I saw a blogger wearing it and after seeing how many different ways it can be worn I decided to stalk the sales on it. When Baublebar had a 40% off sale I finally snagged it. My husband, Jeremy, calls it my “Mr. T Necklace” but every time I wear it I get a number of compliments. When it comes to making a statement, this necklace does it.

As the school year is gradually drawing to a close I find my teacher style relaxing quite a bit. The skinny jeans and cardigan are for comfort and the heels and statement necklace dress the outfit up a bit more for work. You can see another way I wore this necklace here.
