Today is a special post, because I believe it’s important to stop and celebrate your achievements! It helps to take stock of where you’ve been to appreciate where you are! Last Thursday marked the four year anniversary of More to Mrs. E! It started as a way for me to get some balance to my over-worked teaching life and share my fashion finds. I was already reading fashion blogs and spending hours searching for lookalike-items on the internet, along with researching “the best curling wands” and the like online. Finally, my husband suggested, “Why don’t you start your own blog? You spend so much time researching things; you could share that research with others! It could be for teachers who don’t have the time to look it up for themselves!”
I mulled over the idea of a “teacher fashion blog” for a few months, talked to some friends (would anyone even read it?), and finally launched More to Mrs. E! You can read more about that story on my About Me page (which I apparently need to update, oops!). Today, I want to share some favorites from those four years and some things learned!

Fashion Then and Now
When I first started this blog, I was living in an apartment in Washington state, working part-time (in pay; full-time in time) as an AP Government teacher. I shot most of my outfits myself on our apartment balcony with my Dad’s tripod and the self-timer on the camera! lol, I had no remote so I would take 30-70 shots, walking back and forth to see whether I managed to get myself in focus!
On the left is my very first post! The crazy thing is that I still own and frequently wear the top, pants and necklace in this post! Those skinny jeans are the ones you’ve seen in every one of these posts!
That first month led to me sharing my love of Baublebar and trying out a new-to-me retailer that has now become a regular favorite, Shein (then called Sheinside). Though my photos were mostly unedited, and they were almost always on the balcony, I was excited to be sharing my fashion and starting to experiment more in what I wore.
That fist year I also shared my journey into beauty with some beauty tips and recommendations.
Now, my husband is my photographer. We invested in quality equipment and software and I am so happy with how the photos have improved. I have added H&M as a favorite retailer and my style has become a little more neutral. But in every other way, things are very much as they always have been.
I still love statement necklaces, bright pink, and tassel earrings. I still shop at Shein and J.Crew Factory and love the Nordstrom sale!
Many of the items featured in that first year still remain in my closet and others may only have seen a quality-upgrade. The lesson? Fashion trends may change but a well-built closet will stand the test of time!

DIY Projects
I have always been a fan of “projects.” On a long weekend or over summer break you can often find me getting my hands dirty working on some kind of DIY project. I always meant for DIY projects to be a bigger part of my blog, but I lived in an apartment during the early years and that made it difficult to cut and paint things! Moving to Westerly and buying a house again meant I was able to embrace that creative side again turn to larger DIY projects.
Originally, I included DIY projects because they were fun and a way for me to express my creative side. My blog was, after all, mostly about personal expression. But, it also gave me a way to document my projects for when people would ask me how I did it. Over time, this turned into more about encouraging creativity. You know, “Instead of grading over spring break, do some kind of project that you’ll be proud of when you’re done!” I still believe in that and love how DIY projects also make my house more of a home!
I’ll be the first to admit that I am not as regular with my DIY posts as other types of posts. They take so much time to document and now, being a landlord, I have so many projects to cram into the tiny open spaces in my schedule, that I just don’t have time to take photos of each step. Still, DIY posts have overwhelmingly been the most popular posts on my blog.
Lessons Learned
In some ways, I feel like I have only “actually” been blogging two years. When we moved to Rhode Island two years ago, I got serious about blogging as a resource and a business. I was able to put the time into researching themes, buying a domain and learning about analytics – thanks to being out of work! That also made blogging even more important as a creative outlet. Subbing killed my spirit and throwing myself into blogging gave me purpose, hope, and helped me stand upright again.
It hasn’t always been easy to blog. Actually, who am I kidding? It has never been easy. It has meant trying to find times to photograph outfits when my husband can help and when the weather cooperates. Sometimes other responsibilities take priority and I miss a blog post or budget constraints limit what I have to recommend. Sometimes life gets you down and it’s hard to tap into that creative side.
But, I have been blessed by blogging and that is something to celebrate! Writing is therapeutic for me. I love providing information that others find useful and I have made so many friends in the blogging world. My husband and I have connected in new ways due to the blog – as he does his best to learn about what I do and as we shoot photos together. It is hard work, but it’s something I love to do and in many ways, it’s the one thing I really do for myself. This blog is my way of embracing my creative side and I’m proud of how far I’ve come in these last four years!
